STUDENT RESPONSE SYSTEM

Instructors can evaluate class comprehension or retention of complex material and create an interactive learning experience by polling students using a ‘student response system’. Media Services uses a system called 'Interwrite PRS RF' made by a company called CalComp. After evaluating several different systems Media Services chose this one because its radio frequency (RF) technology is much more reliable then the laser technology used in older polling systems.

How It Works
Media Services provides the instructor with a PRS RF receiver hub at no cost. The instructor then installs the PRS RF software, available free from the Interwrite website, and develops their questions. Tutorials are available to help the instructor get started. The system works with WebCT, Blackboard, PowerPoint, and Excel. It is a self-contained system so classes are not limited to specific classrooms. During class the PRS RF hub is connected to the instructor's laptop via a USB cable. The instructor launches the PRS RF software, polls the students, and the system detects radio frequency signal responses sent from the students' clickers.

Students can purchase PRS RF clickers from the UC San Diego Bookstore or elsewhere; some clickers may be available used. Once the instructor presents a question to the class, responses are then transmitted from the clickers to the receiver hub. The resulting data is recorded by the Interwrite PRS RF software and is then available for the instructor to evaluate.
